Packing for a cruise is a different experience than packing for a resort or theme park trip. You need to plan for formal nights, port excursions, pool days, and everything in between.
Start with the essentials: passports, boarding documents, and any required health forms. Keep these in your carry-on bag, not your checked luggage.
For clothing, pack layers. Ship interiors are air-conditioned, but ports of call can be hot and humid. A light cardigan or jacket is a must for dining rooms and theaters.
Most cruise lines have at least one formal or dress-up night. For adults, think cocktail attire. For kids, a nice polo or sundress works perfectly.
Do not forget swimwear -- you will want at least two sets so one can dry while you wear the other. Rash guards are great for kids who burn easily.
Bring a small day bag for port excursions. Include sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a waterproof phone case, and local currency if needed.
Pro tip: Pack a magnetic hook set. Cruise cabin walls are metal, and magnetic hooks are perfect for hanging hats, lanyards, and wet swimwear.
For families with young children, bring a lightweight stroller for port days and a baby monitor for naptime in the cabin.
Finally, leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs. Or better yet, bring a collapsible duffel bag for the return trip.
